LEAF 2018 SPEAKER IN FOCUS: Roger Barroga
Roger Barroga is currently the manager of the FutureRice farm of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), a 5 hectare smart farm located in Nueva Ecija. He leads a team of young ICT specialists, electronics and communications engineers, and systems developers in establishing wireless sensor networks, farm management dashboard, automation and control of drip irrigation systems and water gates, monitoring of paddy water level and aqua pond water quality and weather. The project has recently developed and released in Google Play three farm apps, namely the Agridoc App, e-Damuhan weed recognition app, and the Rice Variety selection apps.
He currently leads the Information Systems Division of PhilRice, which is tasked to develop, operate and maintain the corporate financial, human resource, supplies and property, physical plant and project management information systems. This includes management of PhilRice’s communications network such as internet and telephone services.
He previously led the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture, a pioneering project to modernize the Philippine extension system in 2004-2007 by providing internet connectivity, computer training, and online content in agriculture to agricultural extension workers.
He finished his BS and MS in Development Communication from UP Los Banos in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He is completing his PhD thesis at the University of Western Australia in Perth. He recently received the Civil Service PAGASA Award for 2018, in recognition of the impact of his work at the FutureRice farm.
