LEAF 2018 SPEAKER IN FOCUS: Helianti Hilman

Helianti Hilman is the forefront promoter in sustaining Indonesia’s food biodiversity heritage by re-introducing and bringing indigenous food products from remote Indonesia to the broader market. She graduated Cum Laude in 1993 from Padjadjaran University, Bandung, majoring in International Laws. In 1998, she completed Master of Laws on Intellectual Property Rights at Kings College, University of London. 

Inspired by Indonesia’s wealth on food biodiversity and indigenous knowledge on sustainable food system, in 2008 Ms. Hilman left her works as consultant and founded PT. Kampung Kearifan Indonesia, known also as JAVARA. Through her leadership, Javara builds supply chain, works with smallholder farmers and food producers, nurtures rural entrepreneurs, and creates wide range of fine organic food products of rural Indonesia to serve domestic and export market. In 2017 she launched Javara Academy – School of Food Artisans, an enabling platform for young farmers, foragers and fishermen to become food entrepreneurs, creating and selling added value products from their commodities. 

Ms. Hilman was awarded EY Indonesia Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2013), Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2015), and her work has inspired many young people to purse passion on rural entrepreneurship and preservation of food biodiversity through market creation. In 2014 she was named by Forbes Indonesia among The Inspiring Women Honor Roll, and in 2016 by Top 10 Asia as one of Indonesia’s Top Social Entrepreneur. She is globally recognized as a notable expert and resource person in the area of commercialization of food biodiversity and social entrepreneurship. Her work has been profiled by various media, including Guardian UK (2015), Chanel News Asia (Singapore, 2017) and The Bangkok Post (2018).
