LEAF 2018 SPEAKER IN FOCUS: Dr. Dileepkumar Guntuku
Dileepkumar Guntuku is Global Program Leader of the Seed Science Center at Iowa State University (ISU). Prior to joining ISU Dileep worked at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropic (ICRISAT) as a Global Leader for ICRISAT’s Knowledge Sharing and Innovation program; Director, Center of Excellence in ICT Innovations for Agriculture; Coordinator for ICRISAT South-South Initiative; and a member on ICRISAT’s Research Committee and Risk Management Team. Dileep also worked at the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, India as Principal Scientist and Visiting Faculty at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, India. He has also contributed to the various international and national projects in various capacities that include Commonwealth of Learning, Canada; German Development Corporation (GIZ); Food and Agricultural Organization, International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB-India), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR-India) – National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) funded by the World Bank, Agricultural Modelling Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) to name a few.
Dileep’s projects have had global implications, impacting communities of farmers, researchers, scientists, students and several other stakeholder of agriculture value chain. Beyond academic and professional pursuits, what sets Dileep apart is his sheer ability to understand the real needs of local cultures and communities and tailor programs to improve their lives through Innovations. Towards this, he has led outstanding ICT and Knowledge Systems initiatives that have made a global impact. For example, encapsulating best practices in agriculture in video/online format has helped bring knowledge to thousands of farmers, researchers, scientists, students etc. Promoting Big Data in Agriculture; ‘open’ and free access to research to all brings out expert knowledge that usually rests in universities and labs, into the field – where it can be advocated and applied for the benefit of humanity. He has received a number of awards for his leadership including Iowa State University Professional and Scientific Excellence Award; “Flame Award” for “showcasing Innovative Use of Technology of the Decade”; “Director General’s Gold Medal of Honor” for his outstanding contributions to the ICRISAT; and also best paper awards at national and international conferences.
He has written a book, 10 book chapters, more than 50 research articles and papers. He has also contributed to the policy recommendations to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India for defining policies on e-government initiatives in India. He served on several local, national, and international committees, reviews and editorial boards. These include the executive council of International Society of Extension Education; International Institute of Informatics and Systemics, National Advisory Board of Indo-US Global Education summit; Advisory Board on Open Access India to name a few. Dileep earned a B.S. in Agriculture at the Acharya N G Ranga Agriculture University; and an M.S. Agricultural Entomology at the Anand Agriculture University; and an M.S. in Information Technology in Agriculture and a PhD in Information and Communication Technology at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, India; Graduate Certificate in Human Computer Interaction at the Iowa State University, USA.
