DENR Marinduque Implements Bamboo Industry Seminar
As part of the initiatives to implement Sustainable Integrated Area Development (SIAD) in the Province of Marinduque, the of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Marinduque Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR PENRO Marinduque) have identified bamboo plantation establishment as one of the activities and projects in the SIAD Plan.
In order to better appreciate and explore this project, the Bamboo Foundation of the Philippines in collaboration with PENRO Marinduque, conducts a one-day seminar with a focus on bamboo as an agricultural commodity and as a climate change adaptation and mitigation measure for the resilience of the environment.
"The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is adopting the SIAD approach as the agency's policy framework for localizing development, promoting environmental integrity while creating social enterprises in the countryside and building 'mini-economic zones' that can generate employment, livelihood and equitable income-generating activities in communities," PENRO Marinduque Officer-in-Charge Imelda Diaz said.
"It will be espoused with the Integrated Ecosystems Management as a long-term and integrated approach that recognizes our local Marinduque stakeholders as significant members and influencers of their environment," Diaz added.
As a member of the Marinduque SIAD Technical Working Group, AGREA is excited to attend this seminar as the organization aims to help build sustainable communities through the development and use of natural agricultural practices without negatively affecting the integrity of the environment.
"This is exciting because bamboo is the next big thing in agriculture and environmental rehabilitation," said Cherrie Atilano, AGREA's President and Founding Farmer.
The bamboo orientation seminar was held last 17 March 2017 at the A&A Beach Resort, Barangay Laylay, Boac, Marinduque, Philippines.
